Swiss Franc (CHF)

Currencies

The official currency of Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The franc is a major safe-haven currency valued for Switzerland's political neutrality, strong banking sector, and fiscal discipline.

The Franc in Forex

The Swiss franc (ISO 4217 code: CHF, from the Latin "Confoederatio Helvetica Franc") is one of the three primary Safe-Haven Currency currencies alongside the U.S. Dollar (USD) and Japanese Yen (JPY). Despite Switzerland's small economy, CHF is the seventh most traded currency, accounting for about 5% of global forex turnover.

Safe-Haven Properties

Switzerland's political neutrality, low inflation history, strong rule of law, and robust banking sector make the franc a natural store of value. During Flight to Safety episodes, the franc typically appreciates alongside the yen and gold.

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) has historically been concerned about excessive franc strength, which hurts Swiss exporters. In 2011, the SNB imposed a EUR/CHF floor at 1.20, spending tens of billions of euros to defend it. The sudden removal of this floor in January 2015 caused one of the most extreme moves in modern forex history, with EUR/CHF dropping nearly 30% in minutes.

Key fact: The SNB's January 2015 decision to abandon the EUR/CHF floor is known as "Francogeddon." It caused multiple forex brokers to become insolvent and resulted in billions of dollars in client losses within minutes.

Key CHF Drivers

SNB policy decisions, European political stability (CHF strengthens when eurozone concerns rise), gold prices, and global risk sentiment are the main franc drivers. Switzerland's persistent Current Account surplus provides fundamental support for the currency.
