A monthly survey of financial market experts and analysts in Germany measuring their expectations for the economic outlook over the next six months. It is a leading indicator for the eurozone's largest economy.
What ZEW Measures
The ZEW Economic Sentiment index is published by the Centre for European Economic Research (Zentrum fur Europaische Wirtschaftsforschung) in Mannheim, Germany. It surveys approximately 350 financial analysts and institutional investors about their six-month outlook for the German economy. The index represents the balance of optimistic versus pessimistic responses.
ZEW and the Euro
As the largest economy in the eurozone, Germany's outlook heavily influences the Euro (EUR). A rising ZEW reading suggests analysts expect improvement in the German economy, which is generally positive for the euro. A falling reading signals growing pessimism and potential euro weakness.
The ZEW is released on the third Tuesday of each month, providing one of the first sentiment readings for the current period. It complements the IFO Business Climate survey, which surveys actual business managers rather than financial analysts. When ZEW and IFO move in the same direction, the signal is stronger.
Trading ZEW
ZEW can produce moderate moves in EUR/USD, particularly when the reading diverges sharply from expectations or signals a turning point in economic momentum.
