Producer Price Index (PPI)

Economic Indicators

A measure of the average change in selling prices received by domestic producers for their output. PPI tracks inflation at the wholesale level and is considered a leading indicator of consumer inflation.

What PPI Measures

The Producer Price Index measures price changes from the seller's perspective, covering goods, services, and construction. In the U.S., PPI is released monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, usually a day or two before Consumer Price Index (CPI) data. It tracks over 10,000 individual product prices across more than 500 industries.

PPI as an Inflation Leading Indicator

Rising producer prices often get passed on to consumers, making PPI a leading indicator of future CPI. If manufacturers are paying more for raw materials and charging more for finished goods, retail prices tend to follow. This relationship makes PPI valuable for anticipating inflation trends and central bank policy shifts.

Traders compare PPI with CPI to identify margin pressures. If PPI is rising faster than CPI, businesses are absorbing costs and may eventually need to raise consumer prices, suggesting future inflation.

Key fact: Core PPI (excluding food, energy, and trade services) is the preferred measure for identifying underlying wholesale inflation trends without commodity price noise.

Forex Trading Relevance

PPI releases can move the U.S. Dollar (USD), particularly when they surprise versus expectations and shift the narrative around Federal Reserve rate decisions. However, the market impact is generally smaller than CPI since PPI is seen as an upstream indicator.
